Barcelona strengthened their grip on La Liga’s top spot with a 2–0 away win against Villarreal on Sunday, thanks to goals from Raphinha and Lamine Yamal — the latter scoring after Villarreal had been reduced to 10 men.
The visitors took an early lead in the 12th minute when Raphinha was fouled in the box and calmly converted the resulting penalty, giving Barcelona the advantage. Villarreal’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dealt a blow on the 39th minute when defender Renato Veiga was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on teenager Yamal, who was able to continue after treatment.
With their numerical advantage, Barcelona controlled the second half and Yamal sealed the victory in the 63rd minute, finishing a loose ball in the box to make it 2–0.
The win lifts Barcelona to 46 points, four clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table as the season pauses for the winter break, while Villarreal remain in fourth with 35 points.
Despite being a man down, Villarreal still created chances — notably through Georges Mikautadze — but Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia made key saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The result marks another strong statement by Hansi Flick’s side as they chase La Liga glory, combining clinical finishing with strategic control after gaining the upper hand through discipline and decisive moments.
