Manchester United vs Sabah ended in a comfortable 4-0 victory for Michael Carrick’s side at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils marked their return to the Champions League with a commanding performance against Sabah FK.
Matheus Cunha opened the scoring before Bruno Fernandes doubled United’s advantage, while Benjamin Sesko struck just before half-time to effectively settle the contest. Lisandro Martinez added a fourth after the break as United recorded their biggest Champions League victory since 2020.
The result could hardly have been more welcome for Carrick, who now has only three days to prepare his team for Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City.
Manchester United vs Sabah gives Carrick perfect European start
United made their return to Europe’s elite competition after more than 1,000 days away, and Carrick could hardly have asked for a better opening opponent.
Sabah had navigated four qualifying rounds to reach the main league phase for the first time, but the Azerbaijan champions were eventually exposed by the quality and depth of a Premier League side.
United did have to remain alert during the opening stages, with Sabah creating opportunities that could have made the contest more uncomfortable.
Senne Lammens was not seriously tested, however, while United gradually established control and began finding openings.
The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute. Patrick Dorgu delivered a low cross from the left and Matheus Cunha finished the move to put United ahead.
The goal was particularly encouraging for Carrick because Cunha looked more effective after moving to his preferred left side.
With Marcus Rashford remaining on the bench throughout, Cunha’s performance could have important implications for Sunday’s derby.
Sesko continues to make his case
Benjamin Sesko was another major positive from the night. The Slovenian striker was making his first start since 3 May and immediately provided the focal point that United had been missing during their opening three Premier League matches.
After coming close with a clever back-flick in the first half, Sesko eventually got his reward in the 45th minute.
Bryan Mbeumo threaded a fine pass through to the striker, who remained composed enough to round the goalkeeper before finishing.
The goal was Sesko’s second in consecutive games and offered further evidence that he is beginning to find his confidence in a United shirt.
His physical presence also gives Carrick a different option in attack, particularly against opponents who defend deep.
The timing could not be better. With the Manchester derby only days away, Sesko’s performance will surely put him firmly into contention for a starting position against City.
Bruno Fernandes adds United’s second
Before Sesko completed the first-half rout, Bruno Fernandes had already given United a comfortable cushion. Youri Tielemans produced a brilliant reverse pass to release the captain, who made no mistake with his finish in the 42nd minute.
Fernandes has not yet reached the levels he produced last season, according to the assessment of his performance, but his goal was another reminder of the influence he continues to have on the team.
The Portuguese midfielder was also involved in several promising attacking sequences as United controlled possession.
Kobbie Mainoo was particularly impressive alongside Tielemans, producing a magnificent lofted pass to release Fernandes during the first half.
Mainoo repeatedly found his teammates with precise distribution and was one of United’s strongest performers on the night.
Lisandro Martinez completes the rout
United continued to control proceedings after the break, and Lisandro Martinez added the fourth goal in the 68th minute.
The Argentine defender reacted quickest after the Sabah FK defense hesitated over a loose ball, pouncing to score a rare goal.
Martinez had already played an important role at the other end, leading United’s defence and helping Leny Yoro navigate another competitive appearance.
For Yoro, the game provided another opportunity to build the consistency required to establish himself at the heart of United’s defence.
With the visitors unable to mount a sustained response, Carrick was able to make several substitutions and manage the workload of his players ahead of Sunday’s derby.
Carrick faces a selection dilemma
The comfortable victory has given Carrick more than three points. It has also created some interesting selection questions before the Manchester derby.
Sesko’s performance makes a strong case for another start, while Cunha’s display from the left could leave Carrick deciding between him and Rashford.
Mbeumo also offered an effective presence on the right, while Mainoo’s performance gives the manager another reason to consider how he structures his midfield against City.
The timing is significant because United have collected four points from their opening three Premier League matches, and Carrick knows that a defeat against City would make that start look considerably less encouraging.
United begin Champions League campaign in style
The result provides United with exactly what they needed from their first Champions League outing: three points, four goals and plenty of confidence.
The road ahead will be considerably more difficult, with Atletico Madrid, Como and Sporting Lisbon among the away opponents and Roma and Bayern Munich also scheduled to visit Old Trafford.
That makes securing an early victory even more valuable.
United can now turn their attention towards domestic matters knowing they have made an ideal start in Europe.
For Carrick, the biggest positives were the performances of Sesko, Mainoo and Mbeumo, while Cunha’s return to the left side gives him another attacking option.
After more than three years away from the competition, United have announced their return with authority.
And with the Manchester derby just around the corner, the 4-0 victory over Sabah FK may have arrived at exactly the right time.
