Fenerbahçe and AS Roma played to a nervy 1-1 draw in their Matchday 1 clash of the 2026/2027 UEFA Champions League league phase at the Chobani Stadium in Istanbul.
The two sides were making a return to the biggest club competition in Europe after prolonged absences and sought to put on a show. Roma had been absent for eight years while Fenerbahce’s absence stretched back 18 years.
Bryan Cristante gave AS Roma the lead as the opening half wound to a close before Archie Brown equalised for Fenerbahce at the start of the second half. There was nothing to separate the two sides at the full-time whistle, and both sides took an equal share of the spoils.
Toothless domination
AS Roma dominated possession in the opening half but met an unyielding Fenerbahce defence, and a lack of fluidity in possession undid the Italian side. What Fenerbahce lacked in possession, they made up for it with their lovely attacking displays in the final third. A roaring home support buoyed the Turkish club.
The breakthrough arrives
Bryan Cristante opened the scoring for AS Roma in the 38th minute, but Donyell Malen deserves full credit for his inspirational brilliance that led to the goal. Malen picked up the ball about 30 yards from goal, evaded multiple challenges tenaciously with a bit of skill before unselfishly squaring the ball across to Cristante, who let fly and arrowed it into the bottom corner about 20 yards from goal. Ederson was at full stretch but was unable to deny the venom-laced shot, which flew into his net. Bryan Cristante’s goal was his maiden UCL goal and Roma’s first goal in the competition since 2019. Huge credit to Malen for his brilliant efforts.
Fenerbahce find the equaliser
Roma’s happiness was short-lived as English fullback Archie Brown drew the game level three minutes after the restart as he grabbed an equaliser for Fenerbahce stunningly. Mason Greenwood slipped Brown in behind Roma’s defence, and as he raced onto the ball, the fullback opted for an artistic finish, dinking the ball beautifully over the onrushing goalkeeper. A finish beyond his years!
Close, but not enough
Roma threw everything they had into the match, but their lack of cohesiveness was their undoing, and they failed to grab the matchwinner. The Italian club were awarded a golden opportunity in the 68th minute when Paulo Dybala was brought down in Fenerbahce’s 18-yard box. However, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review revealed he was fouled on the edge of the box, and the decision was downgraded from a penalty to a free kick. Roma opted against a direct free kick, but nothing came out of their clever set-piece routine as Malen blasted wide following Dybala’s smart layoff. The Giallorossi’s efforts were botched by Fenerbahce’s relentless defence.
Similarly, Fenerbahce went on the offensive and introduced former AS Roma striker Romelu Lukaku to swing the match’s outcome in their favour, but they were unsuccessful in their quest. They came agonisingly close to grabbing the match winner in the 86th minute, but Nathan Ake’s header crashed against the crossbar.
Fenerbahce’s coach resigns
The footballing world was left confused as Fenerbahce’s coach, Ismail Kartal, announced his resignation a couple of minutes after the game, during the post-match news conference. The Club’s president, Aziz Yildirim, rejected his resignation and strongly opposed the coach’s departure, saying Kartal is going nowhere amid fans’ frustration with the team’s tumultuous results this season. Doubts remain about his future, and the club should provide clarity in the coming days. Kartal returned to the club in June 2026 for his fourth spell as manager and was tasked with leading the club as it returned to the Champions League for the first time in nearly two decades.
Fenerbahce will visit Aston Villa for their next UCL league phase match on Wednesday, 14 October, while AS Roma will host Champions League superpower Real Madrid at the same time.
