Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his dramatic departure from Portugal’s training camp, insisting that “the coach had broken his word to me” and providing a detailed account of his dispute with Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo’s full statement clarifies that he never demanded playing time, apologised for leaving the camp, accepted that he should be punished, but maintained that the events represented a serious breach of trust.

Ronaldo said the situation began during his first conversations with Jesus after the 2026 World Cup. According to the Portugal captain, the coach told him that his presence was “fundamental” to his project and presented a plan in which Ronaldo would play the first and final matches of the international window.

Jesus also suggested that Ronaldo could remain in Portugal instead of travelling to Norway and Denmark, but Ronaldo rejected the idea because he believed staying behind would set the wrong example for the national team captain.

The forward said the arrangement remained unchanged when Jesus visited his home in Lisbon shortly before the camp began. He subsequently played against Alvalade and accepted being substituted without complaint, even handing the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes.

However, everything changed on the day of the Norway match.

Ronaldo said an assistant approached him during lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to speak to him. To his “absolute surprise”, the coach asked if he was fit enough to play 30 minutes.

“I was fully focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day,” Ronaldo said.

He nevertheless agreed and was told to prepare for 30 minutes. He warmed up from half-time but was never introduced.

“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo wrote.

Ronaldo stressed that the disagreement was not simply about being left on the bench. He said that 48 hours later, he, Jesus and Simão Coutinho held a “deep” and “very frank” conversation intended to resolve the matter.

According to Ronaldo, they agreed that Jesus would explain publicly that Ronaldo had never asked to play, that the plan for the camp had been proposed by the coach himself and that putting Ronaldo through a warm-up without subsequently using him had been a mistake.

Ronaldo said Jesus even asked him for a hug and promised that he would explain everything at the press conference. The understanding, according to Ronaldo, was that he would not play in Denmark but would feature in the match at the Dragão.

Instead, Ronaldo said the press conference was completely different from their private conversation.

“I heard expressions and an aggressiveness that I do not believe I deserved,” he said, describing the coach’s public attitude as one of “I want, I can and I command”.

Ronaldo said notes were prepared beforehand and validated by him, but claimed the final press conference did not reflect what had been agreed.

Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for his own decision to leave the national team camp.

“I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp,” he said. “I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine.”

He also apologised to Portuguese supporters and those who had travelled specifically to watch him, after admitting that he failed to greet fans following the match.

Ronaldo nevertheless explained why he felt remaining with the squad was no longer appropriate.

“I felt that, from that point on, my remaining would only harm the working group,” he said. “I packed my bags and left.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also acknowledged that his status as captain should make his actions subject to greater scrutiny.

“I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor,” Ronaldo said, adding that the Portuguese Football Federation should determine and impose the appropriate punishment.

Despite the controversy, Ronaldo made clear that he has no intention of walking away from Portugal simply because of the dispute.

He rejected the suggestion that his next appearance for the national team should be treated as a farewell. According to Ronaldo, there will be time for farewell matches, but his immediate priority remains competition.

“When I think of the national team, what I really think of is competing,” he said.

Ronaldo recalled remaining with Portugal after learning of his father’s death, explaining that he stayed at the camp until after the following match because of his commitment to the country.

He now expects to return after serving whatever suspension is imposed, provided he remains physically fit and continues playing for his club.

“I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” he said.

For Ronaldo, the dispute with Jesus has therefore not changed his attachment to Portugal. His statement was ultimately an attempt to explain why he left, accept responsibility for doing so, and make clear that he still intends to represent his country when he is able to do so.
