Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim said it will be “impossible to replace” captain Bruno Fernandes after the midfielder suffered a soft-tissue injury in United’s 2–1 loss to Aston Villa. The injury comes at a tough time for United, who are also without Kobbie Mainoo due to a calf issue and will be missing key players like Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, who are away at the Africa Cup of Nations. These absences have compounded the challenge of replacing Fernandes’s creativity and influence in midfield.
Amorim urged his squad to respond collectively, saying other experienced players—such as Lisandro Martínez and Luke Shaw—need to take on greater leadership roles, especially in organising the team and handling set-piece situations where Fernandes’s influence has been significant.

With the team dealing with multiple injuries, Amorim highlighted that younger players like Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey have already been given opportunities and could play an important part while Fernandes is out.
