CFCW vs Arsenal ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for the Blues at Stamford Bridge as Alyssa Thompson scored the only goal of a feisty London derby. The result continued Chelsea’s steady start to the Women’s Super League season while leaving Arsenal with more questions about their attacking form after another match in which they struggled to turn possession and chances into goals.
Thompson’s finish in the 39th minute was enough to separate the sides, with Chelsea defending their lead effectively after the break. The victory moves Chelsea to third, two points behind unbeaten Manchester City, while Arsenal remain seven points off the leaders after only four matches.

Chelsea had the first-half advantage despite Arsenal enjoying plenty of possession and spending significant periods around the hosts’ penalty area.
The visitors struggled to create clear opportunities, however, with many of their attacks ending in efforts from distance or possession being moved around the edge of the box without producing a decisive opening.
Chelsea were more efficient when their opportunity arrived.
In the 39th minute, Keira Walsh unleashed a powerful strike that Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe managed to parry. Thompson reacted quickest to the rebound and fired the ball into the roof of the net, giving Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
The goal provided Bompastor’s side with exactly what they needed. Rather than needing to dominate possession, Chelsea could now concentrate on defending their advantage and exploiting any spaces left by an Arsenal side searching for an equaliser.
Arsenal did manage to hit the post twice during the first half, but both attempts came from tight angles and neither seriously tested Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
Chelsea Defend Lead to Secure Derby Victory
The second half followed a different pattern as Arsenal increased the pressure and Chelsea were forced to spend more time defending.
Renee Slegers attempted to change the game with attacking substitutions, and Arsenal improved after the interval. Chelsea, however, remained organised and continued to frustrate their London rivals.
The Blues had opportunities of their own to extend their advantage, with striker Melvine Malard coming close, but they ultimately did not need a second goal.
Chelsea’s defensive performance proved particularly important because Arsenal continued to create pressure without producing enough quality in the final third.
The Blues had also been dealing with several injury concerns, but they were boosted by the return of England winger Lauren James. Walsh also returned after being forced off with a minor injury during Chelsea’s Champions League match against Austria Wien earlier in the week.
The victory extended Chelsea’s unbeaten run in the WSL to 12 matches and gave Bompastor another important result in the club’s attempt to challenge for the title.
Chelsea had drawn with Aston Villa on the opening weekend but have now followed that result with three successive victories.
Arsenal’s Attacking Problems Continue
Arsenal’s latest defeat highlighted a problem that has followed them through the opening weeks of the season.
Slegers’ side dominated large portions of the match but struggled to turn that control into clear-cut opportunities. Their attacking moves frequently broke down around the penalty area, leaving Chelsea’s defence with relatively little to deal with despite Arsenal’s territorial advantage.
The statistics reflected the problem. Arsenal recorded 19 shots but only two were on target, while Chelsea managed three efforts on target despite making fewer entries into the final third.
There were also moments of uncertainty in Arsenal’s positioning. Kim Little changed roles in midfield during the game, while Alessia Russo moved deeper after starting as the centre-forward.
The tactical adjustments did not provide the breakthrough Arsenal needed.
Their inability to capitalise on pressure has already cost them points this season. Consecutive draws against Manchester United and Crystal Palace had placed additional pressure on the team before the trip to Stamford Bridge, and another defeat now leaves Arsenal seven points behind Manchester City.
Chelsea Gain Momentum as Arsenal Face City
The result represents a significant boost for Chelsea, particularly because Arsenal provided their toughest test of the season so far.
Bompastor’s side did not produce their most dominant attacking performance, but they executed their defensive plan effectively and made the most of the opportunity that came their way.
Their ability to remain composed while Arsenal increased the pressure was a key feature of the victory. Chelsea also showed the value of squad management, with players returning from injury and others being used carefully after their midweek European fixture.
There was plenty of emotion at the final whistle, with former Arsenal player Katie McCabe passionately embracing Bompastor after the victory. McCabe had been booed by visiting supporters throughout the match.
For Arsenal, the defeat leaves little time to recover before another major challenge. Manchester City are next, and the leaders have won all of their WSL matches so far.
Chelsea, meanwhile, remain within two points of City and have now won three of their opening four matches. The London derby victory provides another indication that Bompastor’s side are developing consistency, while Arsenal must find a way to turn their possession and shooting opportunities into goals if they are to close the gap at the top of the WSL.
