The debate over match officials has intensified after Atletico Madrid responded publicly to Jose Mourinho’s complaints following Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat in Sunday’s derby, with the Atletico hierarchy using social media to push back against the Real Madrid manager’s criticism of the refereeing.
Mourinho arrived at his post-match news conference carrying printed screenshots of two first-half incidents that he believed should have resulted in Atletico players being sent off. The Real Madrid boss argued that the decisions had a major bearing on the contest, particularly after his own side later went down to 10 men following Dean Huijsen’s dismissal early in the second half.
Atletico responded on Monday with two posts on X, including a video of a printer producing a sheet carrying the message “#StopAcosoArbitralYA”, which translates as “stop referee harassment now”. A second post featured an image of Mourinho holding his printed screenshots at the news conference alongside the same message.
Match officials become center of Madrid derby controversy
The dispute began after Real Madrid’s defeat at Atletico, their second loss of the season following a 1-0 defeat by Real Betis earlier in September.
Mourinho was visibly unhappy with the decisions made during the derby and arrived at his post-match media conference prepared to make his argument visually. Rather than beginning with a conventional assessment of the match, he held up sheets of A4 paper displaying the incidents he believed should have resulted in red cards for Atletico players.
“We can skip the press conference because the story of the match is right here,” Mourinho said while displaying the images.
He argued that two Atletico players should have been dismissed in the first half, which would have dramatically altered the contest before Huijsen was eventually sent off.
Mourinho accused the referee of making crucial errors and suggested Real Madrid could only speculate about how the second half might have developed had Atletico been reduced to nine players.
The Real Madrid match report published on the club’s official website also attributed the defeat to what it described as “dreadful refereeing” by Ortiz Arias.
Huijsen red card adds to Real Madrid frustration
The controversy became even more significant after Real Madrid defender Huijsen was sent off early in the second half.
The defender was shown a red card for pulling down Giuliano Simeone just inside the penalty area while the score was still 0-0. Real Madrid were therefore forced to play the remainder of the match with 10 men, adding another layer to Mourinho’s frustration about the earlier incidents.
The dismissal changed the balance of the match and left Real Madrid facing Atletico with a numerical disadvantage for a significant portion of the contest.

Atletico have previously used their social media channels to engage in public exchanges with rival clubs. During the summer, the club repeatedly posted about Barcelona’s pursuit of their forward Julian Alvarez, turning the transfer saga into a prominent online exchange.
The latest posts continue that approach, although this time the subject is refereeing and Mourinho’s public criticism following the derby.
Simeone calls for respect
Atletico manager Diego Simeone was also asked to respond to Mourinho’s comments after the match, but the Argentine coach adopted a more measured tone.
Simeone said he respected the opinions of other managers while stressing that coaches occupy a position that comes with considerable public attention and responsibility.
He specifically referenced Mourinho alongside Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini, arguing that managers need to be careful with their public comments.
Simeone emphasised the importance of respecting referees and fellow coaches and said there was a line that should not be crossed.
His comments provided a contrast to the more direct approach taken by Atletico’s social media accounts, which chose to respond to Mourinho’s screenshots with a message of their own.

The fallout from the Madrid derby has therefore extended beyond the result itself, with the decisions made by the match officials becoming a central part of the post-match discussion.
