Breaking: Jose Mourinho Set for Dramatic Real Madrid Return After 13 Years Away

Jose Mourinho to become new real madrid manager

Jose Mourinho is on the verge of one of the most dramatic managerial returns in modern football, with the Portuguese coach now in final negotiations to become the next manager of Real Madrid.

More than a decade after leaving the Santiago Bernabéu, Mourinho is now the clear favorite to replace current head coach Alvaro Arbeloa following a disastrous season that has left the Spanish giants without a trophy and facing growing unrest behind the scenes.

For Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, the appeal of Mourinho is not just tactical. It is about restoring discipline, authority, and identity to a club that has looked increasingly fractured throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

According to reports from Spain, negotiations between Mourinho and Real Madrid are now in their final stages. The 63-year-old is currently the only candidate the club is actively discussing for the managerial role.

Mourinho has been managing Benfica since September last year after signing a two-year contract with the Portuguese club. However, a release clause in his deal allows him to leave for just €3 million within 10 days of Benfica’s final match of the season.

That timing appears significant. Benfica conclude their campaign against Estoril Praia, after which Mourinho is expected to hold discussions regarding his future. While he recently avoided giving direct answers about a possible exit, the growing expectation across Spain is that his return to Madrid is now extremely close.

Why Real Madrid Want Mourinho Back

The move may surprise some observers, but internally, Real Madrid’s reasoning is becoming increasingly clear.

This is not simply about hiring a coach with experience. The club believes it needs a powerful personality capable of stabilising a dressing room that has endured months of tension, inconsistency, and public controversy.

The season has been filled with off-field distractions. Reports of internal disputes between Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde intensified concerns about squad harmony, while speculation surrounding disagreements involving Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Carreras only added to the sense of instability.

Meanwhile, scrutiny around Kylian Mbappe has continued to grow following criticism of his behaviour during injury recovery.

For Florentino Perez, Jose Mourinho represents a manager who can impose structure and command immediate authority inside the dressing room.

Mourinho’s First Spell at Real Madrid

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, overseeing one of the most intense periods in modern Spanish football.

During that first spell, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup while building a fierce rivalry with Barcelona under Pep Guardiola.

His Madrid side became known for its aggression, tactical discipline, and relentless competitive edge.

Although his first tenure ended amid controversy and dressing room tensions, many supporters still view Mourinho as one of the few managers capable of handling the immense pressure that comes with leading Real Madrid.

Now, 13 years later, the club believes his personality may once again be exactly what is needed.

A Trophyless Season Forces Florentino Perez Decision

Real Madrid’s decision comes after a deeply disappointing campaign.

The club ended the season without a single trophy, an outcome that is considered unacceptable by Bernabéu standards. Their La Liga title challenge collapsed as Barcelona secured the championship with a dominant 2-0 victory in El Clásico.

That defeat effectively symbolized the gap between the two rivals this season. Real Madrid also suffered elimination from the UEFA Champions League after a quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.

The club’s lack of cohesion, defensive instability, and inability to control major matches raised serious questions about the direction of the team under Arbeloa.

The statistics reflected that decline. Real Madrid managed just one shot on target in the title-deciding Clasico defeat, their lowest figure in a league game for more than three years.

Mourinho’s Career Since Leaving Madrid

Since departing Real Madrid in 2013, Mourinho has managed several major clubs across Europe.

He returned to Chelsea and won another Premier League title before later taking charge of Manchester United, where he secured the Europa League and EFL Cup.

Subsequent spells at Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, and Fenerbahce produced mixed results, though he guided Roma to the Europa Conference League title in 2022.

His move to Benfica last year was viewed by many as a reset opportunity in his homeland. Instead, it may now become the bridge back to one of the biggest jobs in world football.

Jose Mourinho Real Madrid Return

If Mourinho returns, expectations will be immediate and enormous.

Real Madrid are not hiring him for a rebuilding project. They are hiring him to win instantly.

He would inherit a squad packed with elite talent but struggling for balance and identity. Managing personalities such as Mbappe, Valverde, Tchouameni, and other high-profile stars will require both tactical clarity and emotional control.

The club will also expect Mourinho to restore defensive structure, improve consistency in major matches, and challenge immediately for both La Liga and the Champions League.

There will be little patience for transition periods.

Can Mourinho Succeed in Modern Football Again?

One of the biggest questions surrounding Mourinho’s potential appointment is whether his methods can still dominate at the highest level of modern football.

The tactical landscape has evolved significantly since his first spell at Madrid. Possession-based systems, high pressing, and data-driven coaching models now shape elite football more than ever.

Yet Mourinho still offers something many modern coaches cannot replicate: psychological intensity.

His ability to build siege mentalities, unite dressing rooms against external pressure, and thrive in high-stakes environments remains one of his greatest strengths.

For a fractured Real Madrid side, that mentality may prove invaluable.

Real Madrid New Manager

Jose Mourinho’s potential return to Real Madrid is more than a nostalgic reunion. It is a statement of intent from a club desperate to reclaim authority, discipline, and success after one of its most disappointing seasons in recent memory.

Real Madrid believe Mourinho can restore order where chaos has grown, while Mourinho himself now has the opportunity to rewrite the final chapter of his managerial legacy at one of football’s biggest institutions.

If the deal is completed, the pressure will be immense from day one.

But if there is one manager who has built a career embracing pressure, it is Jose Mourinho.
