Jonathan Kuminga’s free-agency saga has entered an intriguing stage, with the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly emerging as the two leading destinations for the former Golden State Warriors forward as the new NBA season approaches.

The Lakers have maintained interest in Jonathan since the opening stages of free agency, viewing the 23-year-old as a potential answer to their need for a starting power forward. However, negotiations have stalled because of a significant gap between what Kuminga and his representatives want and what Los Angeles is prepared to offer.

Kuminga remains a major Lakers target

The Lakers entered the summer with major changes to their starting lineup after moving on from three of last season’s five starters. With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves now expected to lead the next phase of the team, adding another reliable frontcourt option has become one of the organization’s priorities.

Kuminga has consequently remained high on their wish list.

There has reportedly been mutual interest between the player and the Lakers from the beginning of free agency, suggesting that a move to Los Angeles has appealed to both sides. NBA reporter Evan Sidery previously reported that the Lakers had continued working behind the scenes to secure Kuminga’s commitment as a new wing addition.

The problem has been finding an agreement that satisfies both parties.

Jonathan and his camp are seeking a contract that the Lakers have so far been unwilling to provide, leaving negotiations at a standstill. The situation has become increasingly complicated as the offseason has progressed, despite Los Angeles’ continued interest in the former Warriors star.

Lakers and Cavaliers lead Kuminga race

According to recent reporting, the Lakers are not alone in their pursuit.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as another serious contender, with both teams reportedly viewed as the most likely destinations for Kuminga if a deal can eventually be reached.

Sports Illustrated’s Jackson Caudell identified the Lakers and Cavaliers as the two frontrunners, with a sign-and-trade viewed as the most probable route for either team.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have also been mentioned as a possible dark horse, although their situation appears different. Minnesota could potentially pursue Jonathan if he were willing to accept less money, but the Timberwolves are reportedly less inclined to acquire him through a sign-and-trade.

That could leave Los Angeles and Cleveland with the clearest paths to completing the deal.

For Kuminga, the decision could ultimately come down to which team can offer the right combination of financial terms, playing opportunity and competitive ambition.

Contract demands create Lakers roadblock

Although the Lakers have shown strong interest, their pursuit has not been straightforward.

The Athletic’s Dan Woike reported that discussions had stalled, with the two sides remaining far apart on contract terms. The Lakers have also reportedly been reluctant to sacrifice significant draft capital in a potential sign-and-trade arrangement.

That hesitation could prove important.

Los Angeles clearly values Jonathan, but the organization also has to consider how much it is prepared to surrender to complete the move. Sign-and-trade deals can require teams to give up assets in addition to agreeing on the player’s contract, making negotiations considerably more complicated.

The Lakers’ need for a power forward gives Kuminga leverage, but Los Angeles does not appear willing to meet every demand simply to get the deal across the line.

Why Kuminga makes sense for Los Angeles

The attraction is easy to understand.

Kuminga spent the early part of his NBA career with Golden State and developed into an athletic forward capable of attacking the basket, defending multiple positions and providing energy on both ends of the floor.

For a Lakers team entering a new era around Doncic and Reaves, that athleticism could be particularly valuable.

Los Angeles needs more versatility around its primary ball-handlers, and Kuminga could provide another player capable of creating advantages without requiring the offence to revolve around him.

His experience with the Warriors also means he arrives with championship experience, having been part of Golden State’s title-winning environment.

That combination of age, athleticism and experience explains why the Lakers have remained interested despite the difficulties surrounding the negotiations.

Cleveland could challenge Lakers for Kuminga

The Cavaliers present a different but equally interesting opportunity.

Cleveland is looking to remain among the Eastern Conference’s leading contenders, and adding Kuminga could give its roster another athletic forward capable of contributing on both ends.

Unlike the Lakers, the Cavaliers would not necessarily need Kuminga to become the central supporting piece alongside Doncic. Instead, he could slot into an established competitive group and provide additional versatility.

That could make Cleveland an attractive destination if contract negotiations with Los Angeles ultimately collapse.

The Cavaliers’ presence also means the Lakers cannot assume they will eventually win the race simply because they have maintained interest for much of the summer.

Kuminga’s next move remains uncertain

The biggest question surrounding Kuminga is now how the contract dispute will be resolved.

His previous deal with Golden State was worth $46 million, but his representatives are looking for terms that have so far proven difficult for interested teams to accept. The Lakers appear to want him, but they have not shown a willingness to meet every financial demand or sacrifice substantial draft capital.

That leaves the door open for Cleveland, Minnesota or another potential suitor to change the picture.

For now, however, the Lakers and Cavaliers remain the two teams most closely associated with Kuminga.

As free agency continues to move toward the new season, the former Warriors champion faces an important decision. The Lakers offer a chance to become a key part of Doncic’s supporting cast, while Cleveland provides an opportunity to join another ambitious contender.
