Aaron Ramsdale once looked like one of English football’s most promising goalkeepers. At 28, however, the former England international finds himself in a situation few could have predicted just a few years ago.
The situation of Ramsdale at Southampton has become increasingly difficult, with the goalkeeper yet to make a competitive appearance this season and now sitting fourth in the club’s pecking order.
It is a remarkable decline for a player who was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2023 and was once regarded as one of the Premier League’s rising goalkeeping stars.
Aaron Ramsdale’s rapid rise at Arsenal
Arsenal paid £24 million to sign Ramsdale from Sheffield United in August 2021, a move that initially raised questions among supporters after the Blades had been relegated from the Premier League.
Ramsdale quickly answered those doubts.
His spectacular saves, confidence and personality made him a popular figure at the Emirates Stadium. One of his most memorable moments came against Leicester City when he produced an outstanding save to deny James Maddison from a free-kick.
His performances helped Arsenal finish fifth in his first season, improving significantly from their eighth-place finish the previous campaign.
The following season was even better.
Ramsdale became an important part of an Arsenal side that unexpectedly challenged Manchester City for the Premier League title. Although Arsenal ultimately missed out, the goalkeeper’s performances earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year and the Goalkeeper of the Year award at the London Football Awards.
But his Arsenal career was beginning to change. A costly mistake against Southampton in April 2023 contributed to Arsenal dropping points during the title race. Four months later, Arsenal signed David Raya from Brentford. Raya quickly became Mikel Arteta’s preferred goalkeeper.
Ramsdale started only four Premier League games in 2023-24 before losing his place. He made another costly error against Brentford in March 2024, allowing Yoane Wissa to score.
Arsenal won the match, but Ramsdale never played for the club again.
He was eventually sold to Southampton for £25 million in August 2024 after returning from Euro 2024 with England.
Southampton move failed to revive Aaron Ramsdale’s career
The move initially appeared to offer Ramsdale an opportunity to rebuild his reputation.
Southampton had just returned to the Premier League and wanted a goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at his feet. Ramsdale appeared to fit Russell Martin’s footballing philosophy perfectly.
Instead, the season ended in another relegation.
Ramsdale made 30 league appearances as Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League with 12 points. The club conceded 66 goals, although Ramsdale was not solely responsible for their defensive problems and received praise from some supporters for preventing even heavier defeats.
The relegation was particularly unfortunate for Ramsdale because it was the fourth relegation of his career, following previous drops with Chesterfield, Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
Former Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who worked with Ramsdale early in his career, believes several factors have contributed to his current situation.
“First of all, Aaron’s a fantastic goalkeeper,” Begovic told BBC Sport. “He’s been on an incredible ride where he’s performed at the highest level.”
He added that it had been unfortunate that some things had not aligned for Ramsdale at Southampton.
The failed Newcastle opportunity
After Southampton’s relegation, Ramsdale looked for another route back into the Premier League.
That opportunity arrived when he joined Newcastle United on loan for the 2025-26 campaign. Once again, though, things did not go according to plan.
Ramsdale made 23 appearances in all competitions but featured only 12 times in the Premier League. Neither he nor Nick Pope was able to establish a permanent claim to the starting position.
The season also contained one of the worst individual results of his career when Newcastle suffered a 7-2 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League last 16.
Ramsdale conceded seven goals in the match, the most he has ever allowed in a single game.
What is the situation of Ramsdale at Southampton now?
The situation of Ramsdale at Southampton has now reached another difficult stage. Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has selected Daniel Peretz as his first-choice goalkeeper, with George Long behind him and Jamie Jones primarily operating as a training goalkeeper.
Ramsdale has not even been included in any of Southampton’s first 10 matchday squads this season across the Championship and EFL Cup.
Eckert has insisted that he has had honest conversations with Ramsdale and praised the goalkeeper for remaining professional despite his exclusion.
Ramsdale, meanwhile, still believes he can work his way back into the team. He reportedly rejected loan opportunities from clubs in England, Spain and Italy during the summer because he wanted to remain at Southampton and attempt to help the club return to the Premier League.
There are also personal considerations. Ramsdale’s family is settled in the area, and his wife recently gave birth to their second child. For now, the goalkeeper is prepared to wait until at least January before reassessing his future.
Begovic believes the situation will be difficult and frustrating for his former team-mate, but insists Ramsdale must remain prepared.
“I’d love to see Aaron playing again and hopefully it happens in January,” he said.
For Aaron Ramsdale, the challenge now is not simply finding another club. It is finding a situation capable of restoring the momentum that once made him one of England’s most exciting goalkeepers.
